Using a knife, take a thin cut off one side of each shingle so that it tapers into the shingle adjoining it. Strong shadow lines, which will add further definition to the shingles, will be created by this cut.

This picture shows the results of Step 43. Note the ½" #3 gouge being using to taper the shingles to the side.

A #3 gouge is being used in this step, in place of a knife, to taper the shingles to the side.

Note the different lengths in the rows of shingles that have been created using a #3 gouge. By creating shingles of varying lengths, a hard, stiff look can be avoided, resulting in a much more pleasing appearance.
